UNDERSTANDING

A Glossary of Metaphysical Terms

Author's Note: These definitions are taken from The International Encyclopedic Psychic Dictionary; the most definitive work of its kind I have ever found. If you have any words or terms you are unclear about, please drop me a note and I will do my best to clarify the meaning.

METAPHYSICAL — Beyond the physical. Any activity that is carried out by the mind vs. by the body. Deciding what to wear is a "metaphysical" act. Actually putting the clothing on is a "physical" act.

OCCULT — From the Latin "occulere" meaning "to conceal". That which is hidden from the obvious which must be studied to be understood. That which is magical and mystical. A system of methods compatible with nature to develop psychic power. Knowledge of the invisible world, and its relationship to mankind.

NEW AGE — A period from approximately 1920 to 2000 with tremendous changes in the thinking and lifestyles of the masses. The passing into the Aquarina Age in the solar system. The opening of cosmic consciousness to the masses; the expansion of mind functions; a rise in the dignity of all life; the awareness of science to the God orientation of all things; a time of total global cleansing.

RELIGION — The practice of faith in a supreme power based in dogma written by a particular organized group for the furtherance of its belief systems and politics.

SPIRITUALITY — The growth in attitudes, new understandings and progression of the Soul-Mind which is of a moral nature pertaining to the Divine. Often begins as a seeking for insights not offered by Religion. Deals with those things which are not tangible or material in nature.

MIND — An invisible source of intelligence which flows through the brain that is an ethereal vibrational frequency containing the Akashic Records and present belief systems from a source of intelligence other than the physical brain.

BRAIN — The physical muscle in the head which serves as a go-between organ for intelligence to surface to a "now" awareness to generate the reality produced by thought, and gives of a radiation of energy which responds and acts upon the nature of those thoughts.

CONSCIOUS MIND — The primal flow of invisible energy made up of intelligence, emotion, instinct and the sense of perfectness which creates the state of awareness of our daily lives and actions. The computer.

SUB-CONSCIOUS MIND — The ethereal energy field which vibrates faster than the physical body, which has no counterpart in the physical body, and which is the warehouse which stores all judgments and memories of physical, emotional and sensory perceptions and occurrences. The data bank.

SUPER-CONSCIOUS MIND — Information from the higher source which flows from the universal mind through an ethereal energy field along the silver cord to the brain bypassing the data of the sub-conscious mind. Pure "knowingness" not based in prior logic or reason. Your "gut feeling"; intuition; instinct; inspirational thought; those things not previously learned.

DEJA VU — A French term meaning "already seen". That feeling of having done a new thing in exactly the same manner before. New studies are exploring the possibility that, with increased metaphysical awareness, there are times when our etheric bodies travel before us and when our physical bodies catch up, we experience Deja Vu.

KARMA — From the Sanskrit (bet you thought it was a "new age" catch word, didn't you?); a term used in Buddhism, Hinduism and Theosophy. The principle that makes all humans the cause of their present location on earth, their lifestyle, intelligence, relatives and physical body conditions. The result of all activities, good and bad, through all previous incarnations. The Law of Action that says for every action, there is a reaction, and that all your deeds, thoughts and actions will be with you in future deeds, thoughts and actions, making each person totally responsible for current and future destinies. Karma can either work for one, or against one, depending upon you. It can be changed and deliberately rearranged by changing your deeds, acts and attitudes. The more you learn, the more you practice your new knowledge, the more you grow, the more you alter your karma. Consider karma your soul's bank account; it's either in the red, or in the black, and only you control it.

THEOSOPHY — From the Greek "theos" (god, divine) and "sophia" (wisdom, ethics, divine ethics). A philosophical religious system which claims absolute knowledge of the existence and nature of the Deity; the "wisdom of the gods". Ideas centered in attempts to gain access to the universal spiritual reality that transcends material existence.

DOMINANT PERSONA CONSCIOUSNESS FACTOR — Ideas and principles that become imprinted on the subconscious mind before the individual has the opportunity to examine them, think about them logically, and reach rational decisions about the content. For example, a fear of snakes when the person has never seen a snake.

PROBLEM SOLVING STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS — The personal level of awareness for each person with intuitive skills and metaphysical knowledge that signals the person that the information received is dependable, holds truth for them, and can be relied upon. These signals can include "tingles", goose bumps, a warming of the hands, and other such physical manifestations which tell us to "pay attention".

THOUGHT CONTROL — The most beneficial thing a person can do in this lifetime is learn to practice thought control, for it is thoughts and mental activity that determine a person's health, their daily life experiences, and their emotions. To be consciously aware of your inner thoughts, your inner dialogue that is reflected in your speech and your actions so that you are a reflection of positive energy, is the greatest single lesson that can be learned and practiced.

CHANNELING — There are two types of channeling - trance channeling and conscious channeling. In trance channeling, the psychic medium literally moves the ego, the will and the conscious mind aside in order to allow an entity from the etheric world intelligence to use the physical body in order to communicate, both verbally and with physical movements. This is known as being in a "trance" - thus "trance channeling".

In the case of the conscious channeler, information is impressed upon the mind by the etheric world intelligence which creates a heightened sense of awareness, and knowledge which is beyond the comprehension and experience of the individual being used. This information can be spoken or written. This channeler is fully in the moment, and is not in a trance state.

CLAIRAUDIENT — The ability to hear sounds from nature or the cosmos that others do not hear.

CLAIREMPATHIC — One who can sense with their own body the emotions, attitudes, and feelings of another person.

CLAIRSAVORANT — A person who can taste things in the mouth that are not physically and actually there.

CLAIRSCENTRIST — One who can smell fragrances and odors that are not within the physical surroundings.

CLAIRSENTIENT — The gift of "knowing"; universal knowledge; instinct - our "gut feelings"; information coming from a higher source that feeds directly into our superconscious mind.

CLAIRVOYANCE — Another French term meaning "clear vision". This is the ability to see into other dimensions with spirit eyes, with the physical eyes either open or closed. One may see a complete scene, or parts of a person, scene, object, words, colors, auras — many things are often seen which can relate to past happenings, the present or the future. Those with clairvoyant skills must learn to control the abilities so they may be called upon at will. Otherwise, such visions popping in and out at random can disrupt the routine of daily living in a very unsettling way.

CLAIRVOYANCE-IN-SPACE — Now called "Distant Viewing", and a skill that is being more often used by the military and police. The ability to see events and items at great distances, and in places never physically visited.

WITCH — A term from old England which dates back to the Magi. The original word was "wicca", and through time has gone to "wicce", "wycche", and finally the modern English "witch". It was a seeker of knowledge who uses traditions, psychic skills, rituals, astrology, astronomy, mind/brain psychology, anatomy, psychometry and other such knowledge in healings and blessings. In modern times, the witch is too often thought of as evil but, as in all things metaphysical, power and spirit gifts can be used for the highest and best good of the people, or for selfish and self-serving purposes. It all lies in the intent and life's path of the user of such gifts.

BURMESE MEDITATION — Sitting quietly, alone, and connecting to the inner self and the Universal Mind for greater understanding and attitudes. No sounds or aids are used.

ALERT-PASSIVITY — The state of consciousness where the physical body systems slow down, the emotions become quiet, and the conscious mind is aware of outside noises and activity but does not act.

END-STATE MEDITATION — A form of quiet meditation where the individual sits with the eyes closed, and watches thoughts go by without taking any action or forming any opinions on those thoughts.

GOING WITHIN — The ability to enter the peaceful state of awareness which turns off all outside stimuli. One is completely absorbed with the body, the inner-mind and the etheric world without regard for time.

LOWERED STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS — A state where the mind is under control, the body is relaxed, and the emotions are quiet to allow a heightened state of awareness.

NO-MIND STATE — A Zen term meaning becoming at one with the universe with no thoughts of material things.

GODFORM POSITION — Sitting relaxed in a chair with back straight, knees a little apart, hands in lap, and eyes closed.

VACILLATING — A normal feeling during meditation that seems as if the body is swaying, or moving, when it is not. Feeling the vibrations of the etheric bodies.

EGYPTIAN YOGA — The use of various breathing techniques for taking in the vital life force necessary for good health.

COMPLETE BREATH — Taking a deep breath, through the nose, to the bottom of the diaphragm and pit of the stomach, holding the breath a few seconds, and forcing all air out, again through the nose, until the chest is empty of air. A Yoga practice for cleansing, bringing fresh oxygen into the blood, and calming stress.

TANTRIC MEDITATION — A Tibetian technique of meditation/visualization which sees energy forms coming from the void, and interacting to create light and color.
