Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R, CO), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs recently promised to hold Congressional Oversight Hearings on the Leonard Peltier case.
This is a major step because, for the first time, prosecutors and the FBI will have to answer some very pointed questions about their handling of the case.
We do not know exactly when these hearings will take place, but when we find out, things must be put into action immediately. My task is to keep the internet informed on what is going on, release information as it is made available, provide a communications link between the BPH, LPDC and Peltier supporters world-wide.
The screen name FREEPLTIER@aol.com has been set up for this sole purpose. Please put it in your electronic address books, write it down, memorize it, whatever necessary.
Please consider this first message as a test message in the respect that I would like a response from all recipients so that I know the communication loop is working.
Please also make note that the first call for action is being put out at this time.
When notice of the hearings is given...a village of tipis and lodges will form on the mall in Washington D.C. Hundreds of them to help house the hundreds of people we expect to show up in support of our brother Leonard.
This first call is for anyone that has a lodge that can be set up there to make it ready for when the time comes. Also, Mr. Banks and Ms Peltier have asked me to notify all persons that they would like as many tradtional singers, drum groups and dancers as possible to be on hand. Just because we are going to Washington does not mean that we have to leave our culture behind. If anyone receiving this is part of a drum group or a dancer, please notify me as soon as possible so that we may know how many to expect.
We are also looking for people in and around the D.C. area who may have rooms or land where people could stay while the hearings are going on. We especially will need rooms for the elders who will be accompanying this large contingent.
Also, anyone having land or rooms available in the areas between Rapid City, S.D. and Washington D.C. please notify me as soon as possible as rooms, camping, showers, etc will be needed for the witnesses travelling from South Dakota to D.C. to testify on behalf of Mr. Peltier during the hearings.
Once the hearings begin, there will be 24 hour security of the village on the mall provided by the Arizona Chapter of AIM and the AIM Patrol from Rapid City.
Please respond as soon as possible and feel free to contact anyone you think may be able to verify this information. I know that many people are distrusting of the net and emails.
I also urge one and all to make sure that you continue to write, phone, fax and email the president regarding Executive Clemency for Leonard Peltier. We cannot be silent. No one else will do this FOR us. Leonard has many supporters the world over but we MUST keep his name out there for all to see. Every time Clinton looks somewhere he should see a sign, t-shirt, button, bumper sticker, whatever, reading FREE LEONARD PELTIER. Use it to sign your emails...to everyone...bring up the topic in chat rooms...circulate petitions...hold community forums...have public showings of "Incident at Oglala"...educate yourselves on the case...post it to bulletin boards...mailing lists...whatever and whenever you can until our brother is free.
Remember...Leonard Peltier could be any one of us...at any time.
"No one is free as long as one person is oppressed." FREE LEONARD PELTIER.
