Those who laugh off meditation as another "New Age" gimmick could not be more wrong. It has been used since the beginning of time to achieve a higher state of consciousness which allows the individual to experience feelings of peace, tranquility and heightened awareness. It is an altered state of being.
The scientific community has finally recognized the power of meditative states in healing and recovery. There are now many documented cases where critically ill people have defied the odds by recovering from injury and disease where there was little hope by the concentrated use of various meditative techniques. Medical testing has shown a measurable and definite change in body chemistry and metabolism during meditation. Scientists are now calling this the Fourth State of Consciousness, and very real evidence of its existence and effectiveness is measured in a fifth brain wave signature which appears on EEG readouts of brain activity coming from the Alpha and Theta regions of the brain.
Too complicated? That's O.K. Suffice it to say that meditation is a serious technique which can improve your life in many ways. The benefits you can gain are certainly worth giving meditation a fair chance. Your skill will increase with practice, and you should practice as often as the thought pops into your mind. As I have said before, and will say again and again and again — THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO MEDITATE. There are many approaches, many schools of meditation, many techniques which are available from all cultures around the world. We will explore many of them here.
