Exercise One - Focus

This first exercise asks that you only give it 15 seconds. That's right — 15 seconds. Turn the volume down on the T.V., or go sit on the edge of your bed, or better yet, lock yourself in the bathroom. You want 15 seconds of dead quiet, a piece of paper and a pencil.

Pick out an object that you see every day; something common and ordinary like your hairbrush or a bottle of shampoo. Whatever your eye falls on is it. For 15 seconds, study that object like you've never seen it before. Concentrate on it with all of your energy and all of your attention. FOCUS on the object.

At the end of 15 seconds, cover it up, or put it under something where you can't see it. Now — write down a description of what you saw. The shape, size, color, any words, any designs or decorations. Describe in great detail what you saw. DON'T CHEAT! When you cannot remember a single thing more, get the object and compare what you wrote with its true appearance. How did you do?

No more for day one. On day two, pick another object in the same way, and do the same thing EXCEPT this time, concentrate for 20 seconds. Repeat everything you did before.

Each day, repeat the exercise adding 5 seconds and picking a new object each time. At the end of a week, evaluate yourself. Are you being more successful in quieting your mind? Are your powers of perception improving? Is your concentration getting better? Can you remember more things in more detail?

Continue with the exercise adding 5 seconds at a time, and choosing objects that are progressively more difficult. If you are faithful in your efforts, you will soon be able to totally focus on the thing that needs your undivided attention, for as long as you choose, regardless of the noise and confusion which may be going on around you.
It Works!
